At Sampford Arundel Primary School our intention is to provide an Art & Design curriculum which allows children to explore their imagination, generate ideas, acquire skills, apply judgements and celebrate their learning. We want the children to develop as critical and creative thinkers and consolidate their learning in a variety of contexts. Through progressive and inspiring planning, we intend to encourage the children to express, explore and celebrate their own ideas as well as those of their peers. We aim to foster originality and creativity using Art.  
 
An Artist at Sampford Arundel and Stawley Primary Schools will:

• Enjoy getting lost in a world of Art, through exploring the work of artists and immersing themselves in their own creations.
• Master techniques and develop observation and evaluation skills.
• Have pride in their own unique works of Art and respect for those of their peers.  
• Have knowledge of and be able to reflect upon a diverse range of Artists.  
• Use their sketchbooks in Key Stage 2 to demonstrate their knowledge and skills using materials and drawing skills.  
• Develop language skills so that they are able to talk with clarity and passion about Art and artists' techniques.
• Use their sketchbooks in Key Stage 2 to demonstrate their understanding of colour, pattern, texture, line, form, space and shape.  
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
• Talk about Art in the ‘real world’ and how it relates to future careers.  
• Enjoy Art as a subject and talk about their experiences with positivity.
• Express themselves creatively using using a wide range of media including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking and ceramic.

To ensure that there is a depth to our curriculum we have an ongoing focus on Design and Technology and  Art and Design.

As part of this focus, each class from Pre-School to Year 6 focus on the concepts, content, vocabulary, knowledge and practical skill acquisition associated with subjects associated with creativity. 

At the end of the term, depth (Kapow Learning Statements) and breadth (National Curriculum End Points) are assessed using analyse tasks and pupil conferencing. 

Art and Design Technology will be taught to deepen the National Curriculum and enhance the experiences of a topic.
